Oops!

I dropped my iPhone 4 in the washing machine today.

I'm seriously hoping as well as doubting its survival.

I may be overly skeptical, but the same fate met my very first iPod, and there was no rescuing that puppy.

Apparently, Apple doesn't create washer-proof products.

Too bad.

Don't turn it on! Jon's iPhone went through a complete wash cycle and half-way through the dry cycle before I rescued it. I brought it to him steaming hot. He left it off for several days. When he turned it on it worked! The only problem was that soap had gotten into the little holes, so it was really hard to hear him talk on the phone. So maybe there's a little hope?

Alber went swimming once with his phone and it still worked. It wasn't an iPhone though, maybe the cheaper phones are more sturdy. Good luck!

Why are you doing wash when you're pregnant?! You're blowing my mind...

Hey, I heard a really cool trick. Like Jen said, don't turn it on. But then, put it in a bowl of dry, uncooked rice. It will absorb moisture out of the phone & there's a shot at recovery. Haven't tried it myself, but it worked really well for the guys on Hawaii Five-O! :)

It will live again.

I think the dry cycle may have actually helped it a bit on mine. The key is to get it all dried out. You could put it in the oven on super low or I have heard of other people leaving it out in the sun. The rice doesn't sound like a bad idea either, just not quite as fast.

So, I'm not the first commenter to say that I did the same thing to my iPod Touch (which I think was yours before it was your dad's before it was mine . . .). Anyway, it was a complete washer cycle. After letting it dry out, it lived again. The wi-fi reception has been erratic since then, but this little 1st generation 8 GB wonder is still kicking.
